Serving as the gateway to the spectacular Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach is not too shabby itself. The town centers around the strip of golden sand that is Airlie Beach, and the man-made lagoon which is perfect for swimming. It was once a mecca for backpackers but recently the rest of the world has discovered Airlie Beach and its potential as a lovely beachside town and holiday resort! Airlie Beach’s main drag is Shute Harbour Road, and most accommodation, shops and restaurants are along here. There is a vibrant bar scene and nightlife in the town, and bars are concentrated on Shute Harbour Road also. The lagoon is a popular place for gathering and swimming, as it is constantly guarded by lifeguards and is devoid of the stinging jellyfish which can often be found in the open water. Outside of the central Airlie Beach area are the suburbs of Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket, and Shute Harbour road continues for 10 kilometres to Shute Harbour itself, where ferries bound for the Whitsundays leave. It is not only the islands that draw visitors, but what is beyond- Australia’s natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef. Airlie Beach is known for its watery attractions. However after those have been experienced, it is also a great spot to begin a Queensland road trip- it is not too far up the coast to Townsville, Cairns and Cape York Peninsula.
