If your child is less than five years old, they must be properly seated in an approved child restraint. From ages five to seven, they must be in a child restraint if one is available, and if not, wearing a safety belt.
Approved restraints include:
β An infant restraint, often called a baby capsule, for use from birth to 9kg or approximately 6 months of age.
β A convertible restraint, often called a car seat, which can face both forward and backward, for use from birth to 18kg or approximately four years of age. It is considered safest for children to rear face as long as possible.
β A front-facing child restraint, also often called a car seat, for use from 9kg or approximately 6 months of age, to 18kg or approximately four years of age.
β A booster seat, for use from 14kg or approximately four years of age to 26kg or approximately seven years of age.
β A child harness, for use from 14kg or approximately four years of age to 32kg or seven plus years of age.
Your responsibility as the driver is to make sure that any child under five years of age is properly restrained by an approved child restraint. They must not travel in the car if you can't put them in an approved child restraint.
